The Maxi 72 Class (M72 Class) is an International Maxi Association (IMA) affiliated non-profit organisation. Started in 2014 by seven owners of Mini Maxi Racers who wanted to have more efficient means to promote and control their racing.

It is an Owner Driver Class, there are strict rules on this aspect.

Rob Weiland (TP52 class manager and boat building consultant) was asked to assist in creating the class. Class Bylaws and a draft version of the Class Rule were made, debated and installed by the members near the end of 2014.

A regatta schedule for 2015 was put in place and a class measurer was chosen, Adam Cowley.

It will take some time to get accustomed to not just being individual competitors on the water and to work together on streamlining scheduling and rules. With a bit of give and take it will result in fairer and better competition and more boats racing at the same events.

Now that the 2015 season has ended and the teams are focussing on the 2016 racing calendar which has grown to an unprecedented number of high quality events in exciting locations (Key West, Antigua, Virgin Gorda, St Barth, Newport RI, Bermuda, Palma and Porto Cervo) it is safe to say that the Maxi72 Class has achieved the goals set in 2014 and has established itself as a class. By no means we can lean back, we now have to concentrate on growing the participation and number of class members. Eight boats racing and eight members seems a sound target.
